The photo was taken in the walk of comic heroes of Hong Kong.
Since I was a kid, I was amazed/bored with the way words were strung together. From Dick and Jane, run Dick, see Jane. I bet Tarzan had more fun than did Dick. Was that the same Jane?
But the first trip to the library in second grade changed all that and I thought Miss Kinderman was the most wonderful person in the world, she was the school librarian.
From then on reading became an exciting adventure, oceans to be swam, mountains to be climbed, rivers, valleys and caves to be explored. Deserts to be crossed. Space to be traveled, aliens and other life forms to be discovered. Mysteries to be solved!
On the last day of school, in second grade, Miss Kinderman came over the intercom in the classroom and made a startling announcement, “The library will be open this summer.” I looked to the heavens and gave thanks. I had already been haunting the Little Rock public library for about six months prior. And with this announcement it meant I could check out six books at the public library and six books at the school library, a total of 12 books each week. I attempted to read everything on the shelves, but gravitated to boy’s adventure stories, mysteries, and science fiction. Danny Dunn was my go-to hero of adventures and so also was almost every time traveling, space faring adventurer I came in contact with through the media of reading. I’m thankful for that! And here I am today writing about the same.
Thanks for reading.
